Obituary for Elinor Berger

On Saturday, June 5, 2021, Elinor Ruth Evenchick (m. Berger), loving mother to Ruth and Jake and grandmother of five, passed away at age 78 in New York City.

Elinor was born on October 25, 1942 in Manhattan, NY to Elihu (Ted) Evenchick and Ruth Pasternak Evenchick.

Elinor was a brilliant mathematician with special interests in geometry, number theory and game theory. Her PhD dissertation was entitled “Concerning Fixed-Point Free Orientation Preserving Homeomorphisms of the Euclidean Plane”. She received degrees in Mathematics from The University of Maryland (Bachelor’s), Brandeis University (Masters), and City University of New York (Ph.D) and served as a full Professor of Mathematics at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA for 30 years. She remained active with the American Mathematical Association throughout her academic career and into retirement.

Elinor was a devoted sister and loving mother and grandmother. She was an integral part of both her children and all her grandchildren’s lives. She cherished her relationships with her cousins. Elinor had many passions. She was a staunch and early advocate for anti-smoking public health measures, a former lifeguard and avid swimmer, and lover of (very) dark chocolate.

Elinor was preceded in death by her father, Elihu, mother Ruth, and brother Leslie Evenchick. She is survived by her sister Isabelle Evenchick Grover, her daughter Ruth Berger (husband Jeffrey Vogel), and her son, Jake Berger (wife Mandy Key). She is also survived by her five grandchildren Jay, Eric, and Andrew Vogel, and Mabel and Lucinda Berger. Her former husband is Mark Berger of Columbus, Georgia. A funeral service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Tuesday, June 8 at 10:30 am.
